Week 33 "Big fish lost"
Entering this week, conditions looked very good. Following the last week stable fishing, we were hoping to see the good fishing continue as more salmon move into the river. With guests arriving from all over the world, we are ready to take on the next big push and see what the coming days will bring.
And it didn’t take long for Jason, a good friend of the lodge, to hook into one of the fish we are all looking for. Fishing through our famous Home Pool and down into the lower section closest to the sea, Jason connected with a big salmon that immediately showed its strength and gave him a serious fight. Jason fought the fish hard and did everything right, but unfortunately, at a crucial moment towards the end of the fight, as he applied good pressure to turn the salmon, the line suddenly snapped.
This is a part of salmon fishing that you simply have to live with. It’s never easy to loose a good fish, especially after a hard fight like that, but that’s salmon fishing. You win some, you lose some.
Elsewhere on the river, at arround the same time, Rob also connected with a big fish. This fish never came close to being landed, as it simply stayed deep in its hole and refused to come out, until eventually the fly just popped out of its mouth.
Even though this was heartbreaking, the week kept moving, with more grilse entering the river system. All of our guests had their chances at these smaller but still very exciting fish, and it was great to see plenty of action continuing throughout the week.
Alessandro, a first time guest from Italy, had travelled all the way to Lakselv in search of his biggest Atlantic salmon, and that would happen while he was fishing in Upper Zone 2. As the session was coming to an end, Alessandro decided to give it one last try with a bigger fly. And there it was—the fish he had travelled all the way to Lakselv for. A beautiful 90 cm, 8.5 kg female that put up a strong fight and was landed quickly and safely. Another couple of salmon in the same size range were landed towards the end of the week. But the tale of the week was alot of bigger fish lost.
There is a lot of rain forecast for the beginning of next week, so we will have to see how the river reacts and what conditions it brings.
